More of a style of whimsical illustration than they are something meant to be funny, cartoons can make a point by being humorous. They have a place in design that cannot be achieved any other way—making a house smile; a paint bucket dance or toddlers fly for instance.

Like illustrations, cartoons come in many flavors; simple to complex, hand drawn to computer generated. A cartoon can be used to simply make a point or as the primary element in a logo or design. Many books and brochures can benefit from a cartoon, or cartoon-like illustration.

A good cartoon or illustration can convey any number of ideas in a colorful way that cannot be achieved with other types of graphics. The same way a map or technical illustration can concisely convey a product or process.
